John Andrew Isense was a Hessian (a Dragoon in the Prince of Brunswick Regiment) prisoner of war who was released to work on a local farm in West Springfield, Massachusetts. While gathering in a crop on that farm in August of 1780 he was struck by lightning and killed. His grave marker - including a portion in German - was erected by the town's citizens.
